Meet handbag designer Sabrina Love,
our featured designer for February
What kind of products do you create and where can people find them? Luxury Handbags made from Italian leather but, produced locally. They can be found in boutiques nationwide and on line www.sabrinalovesbags.com.
What inspired you to start doing what you do? I have always loved designing in many formats, but, I also have an analytical side. Starting my own company allowed me to delve into both the creative and business sides of my personality. Nevermind my persistent weakness for handbags, traveling and “old Hollywood glamour”. I am so lucky that “Sabrina Love” incorporates all of that! |
What's your background and have you always been creative? Are there other artistic endeavors you're involved in? My background has included Costume Design, Fashion Styling and Interior Décor. My main hobby is photography.
Where do you get your ideas for your designs? Ideas come from everywhere, I get a lot of inspiration from old movies and my travels.
What type of equipment do you use? Do you make all of your pieces yourself? I do not make all the pieces myself, I simply don’t have the capacity to produce everything here. They are all made in the USA, by hand and with special leather sewing machines, no mass factory assembly lines.
How do you see expanding your line in the near future? I will continue to create new designs and I am always adding new and current colors and textures with each season. At some point I would love to expand the line into a lifestyle brand.
Whose work do you admire? I really have a whole new admiration for new, emerging, independent designers who have high quality pieces. I love Suzabelle clothing, her line is great and I admire her persistence and hard work!
What advice would you offer new designers entering the market? Just don’t give up!! Keep at it, because it is going to be way harder than you could possibly imagine, but also that much more fulfilling!
What is your vision for your business and where would you like to be in five years? I would love to continue to grow at a sturdy and steady pace, picking up boutiques and larger clients consistently along the way. I am excited to get to a level where I can hire a very solid support team so that I can get back to designing more.
Any other area of fashion you'd like to delve into? I really enjoy all areas of design. I would love to have a lifestyle brand that encompassed all areas of life, home, family, travel, style.
What current trend would you like to see go away? Well, they are just coming back, but, please go away the parachute pant! Once in a lifetime is already too much. Also, I would love to see designers and people in the “industry” be more supportive and less catty with each other. I don’t think you have to emulate the judges on Project Runway to be successful.
If you could have one item, new or vintage, what would it be? Owwww, probably a vintage Chanel bag….yummmy! Of course I wouldn’t ever be able to carry it because that would be "cheating on myself" ;)
What item did you wear to shreds growing up? My one and only pair of "designer" jeans, my stonewashed Calvin Klein, peg-leg with zipper ankle jeans! Oh, my god!! Guess I just really dated myself.
FUN
